Sam Rowlands MS for North Wales is delighted to hear work is progressing to improve pavements at a popular tourist destination in his region.
Conwy County Borough Council has announced that, weather permitting, work will start on Phase 2 of the Mostyn Street repaving programme later this month. Phase 2 will focus on improving the pavements on the west side of Mostyn Street, Llandudno, between Gloddaeth Street and Lloyd Street. Work will include replacing kerbs and pavements in Mostyn Street using heritage style paving slabs up to the shop boundaries.
Mr Rowlands, Shadow Minister for Local Government said:
“The poor state of the pavements have been complained about for years by locals and visitors alike and I am delighted to see the council is now continuing with this project. Llandudno, as we all know, is a major tourist and shopping destination. It is a jewel in the crown for North Wales attracting thousands of visitors every year.
“It is absolutely vital for the continued prosperity of the town that improvements are made and areas like pavements are in keeping with the Victorian heritage of this area.”
His sentiments were echoed by Harry Saville, Mayor of Llandudno and councillor for the Gogarth Ward who said: “It is great to see money being spent improving Llandudno and whilst there will still be much more of Mostyn Street to do, this is a big improvement for our high street. I’m looking forward to seeing the results.”
Greg Robbins, Conwy County Borough Council Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, and Councillor for the Mostyn Ward, has been campaigning for pavement improvements for many years. He said: “This is a significant infrastructure project for Llandudno. The new pavements are of a different design to the current ones, so will hopefully last much longer and enhance Mostyn Street.”
Louise Emery, Conwy County Borough Council Deputy Leader, Councillor for the Gogarth Ward added: “I welcome the continued improvements to the pavements in the town. It is great to see major investment taking place to make the high street even more attractive to tourists and for local businesses.”
There have been aspirations to carry out a large-scale repaving project for around 30 years, but nothing materialised until 2019. The repaving project is being undertaken in phases, with phase 1 completed in 2019.
The new work which starts on February 14 and is due to finish on April 8, is phase 2, between Gloddaeth Street and Lloyd Street, as well as short stretch of those two roads.
The project will only cover the parts of the pavement that are in public ownership as those which are owned by private landlords and businesses are not included.
